Junior Backend Engineer (Remote)

A remote role with a technical team that looks after and improves a health information platform built on PHP, Drupal and Symfony. The organisation values steady, careful engineering on a production system used by real people. It suits early-career developers who have a solid backend foundation and some hands-on exposure to Drupal or Symfony, gained through work, personal projects, coursework or open-source contributions. You will learn from experienced engineers, grow your understanding of an existing codebase, and gradually take on more responsibility over time.

What you'll do

• Maintain and develop backend features on a Drupal-based platform
• Build and modify Drupal modules and backend functionality under senior guidance
• Work with PHP and Symfony components to support application functionality
• Support API development and integration with other systems
• Troubleshoot and resolve application issues, including Tier 2 and Tier 3 support
• Take part in code reviews, testing and deployment, and document technical changes

What you need

• Basic to intermediate PHP knowledge
• Some practical exposure to Drupal, ideally Drupal 9 or 10
• Basic understanding of Symfony and REST APIs
• Basic knowledge of relational databases and SQL
• Familiarity with Git and version control
• Willingness to learn and work within an existing production codebase
