SDK Engineer, Python (Remote - Worldwide)
Candidates can apply from any country; the team is distributed across 60+ countries and works asynchronously. A fast-growing developer platform company offering a complete backend toolkit covering databases, authentication, file storage, realtime messaging, serverless functions and vector search. This engineer will own the Python client library that developers use to reach these services from backend services, data pipelines, notebooks and AI agents, in both synchronous and asynchronous styles. The work is done in public repositories and issue trackers, and the team is fully remote and open-source-first.
What you'll do
- Design and evolve the Python SDK across database access, authentication, storage, realtime and functions, with sync and async APIs that feel idiomatic to Python developers.
- Triage inbound issues, review outside contributions and keep CI and release automation reliable.
- Make the library fully typed and checker-friendly so editor autocomplete and static analysis stay accurate for users.
- Test compatibility across Python versions, async frameworks, serverless runtimes and notebooks, with dependency ranges that do not conflict with user projects.
- Work on long-lived websocket connections, including reconnection, subscriptions and presence behavior.
- Track changes shipped by sibling platform teams, reflect them in the SDK and document them in the changelog, using deprecation paths and migration guides for breaking changes.
What you need
- Deep working knowledge of modern Python typing, including generics, protocols, overloads and TypedDict, and strict type checking.
- Experience authoring or maintaining a published library with a public API and external users.
- Solid asyncio skills and a clear view on how a library should serve both sync and async callers.
- Familiarity with Python packaging for libraries, including pyproject.toml, wheels and version support policy.
- Strong written communication, since design docs, changelogs and public issue replies are a large part of the role.
- Comfortable working autonomously and across time zones in an asynchronous team.
