Senior Android Software Engineer (Contract, Remote - Select Countries)

Applicants outside the US are engaged through a local Employer of Record and must already have work authorization in their country. At least four hours of the workday must overlap with 15:00-21:00 UTC. A nonprofit organisation that runs large free knowledge projects is hiring a senior Android engineer on a contract basis. The role sits in the core experiences engineering group and supports the app experience and app growth teams, whose aim is to grow an active readership on the mobile apps. The team is fully remote and works across time zones. You will work closely with product, design, analytics and other native app engineers.

What you'll do

• Lead delivery of medium-complexity initiatives, from technical discovery through release, including breaking work into features, estimating and managing scope.
• Design and build accessible, adaptable and scalable Android components for a global, multilingual audience, and lead system design for medium-sized projects.
• Build software that is easy to test, observe and debug, and instrument features so product analysts can measure them.
• Identify technical risks and opportunities early and help the team make pragmatic trade-offs across quality, velocity, maintainability and user impact.
• Keep the team aligned on priorities, capacity and shared goals, and plan work with awareness of upstream and downstream effects.
• Follow team standards for code review, documentation, accessibility and decision-making, and help others through knowledge sharing.

What you need

• Bachelor's degree and 5-10+ years of professional experience, with significant experience building Android applications.
• Strong proficiency in Kotlin and XML, hands-on experience with Jetpack Compose, and familiarity with Android architectural patterns.
• Experience with Android performance optimisation to keep apps smooth and responsive under varied conditions.
• Comfortable working independently in a self-driven, lean team, with clear written and verbal communication.
• Ability to work with the required overlap with 15:00-21:00 UTC and current work authorization in the country of hire.
