Senior Software Engineer, Backend - Distributed Systems (Remote - Worldwide)

Hiring is location-based; candidates outside the US, UK and Singapore are hired through an international employer partner. UK range: £90,300 - £148,500. Singapore range: S$178,600 - S$267,900. This is a senior backend role on a distributed systems team at a fully remote enterprise software company that sells a process orchestration platform used by large banks and other big organisations. The team builds the durable, highly available, horizontally scalable streaming layer that the platform's orchestration engine runs on. You will work on consensus-based replication, cluster membership, and high-throughput network and disk I/O. The company is growing quickly and has an AI-first focus.

What you'll do

• Design, build and maintain backend services for a distributed streaming platform, focused on durability, high availability and horizontal scalability.
• Lead medium-to-large initiatives (3+ months) end to end: work with product management to turn business needs into technical requirements, write solution designs and project plans, and deliver on schedule.
• Help mature disaster recovery and resilience, including an online backup and restore API and improvements to multi-region and multi-tenant cloud capabilities.
• Build developer and operator tooling that makes complex distributed systems easier to understand, troubleshoot and run safely in production.
• Work with DevOps and other teams on CI, testing and local development workflows to shorten pull request merge times.
• Take part in on-call and L3 support rotations, resolving complex, performance-sensitive production issues with Support and SRE.

What you need

• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong focus on backend and/or distributed systems.
• Proven track record leading medium-to-large engineering initiatives (roughly 3+ months), including coordinating across teams and delivering predictably.
• Hands-on experience with highly concurrent, data-intensive software and a solid understanding of network and disk I/O (throughput, latency, backpressure, batching, failure modes).
• Able to work autonomously on unfamiliar problems and break them into concrete steps with minimal supervision.
• Strong written and spoken communication for a remote-first team, including translating requirements with non-technical stakeholders.
• Nice to have: experience with workflow or process orchestration software, consensus or membership protocols (such as Raft, Paxos, SWIM or CRDTs), observability tooling, on-call support, or deep JVM knowledge.
