Senior Staff Software Engineer - Browser Engine Experiments

This is a senior individual-contributor role on a small team exploring new uses of web engine technology, based at a mission-driven, open-source organization with a large global user base. The work is hands-on: designing experiments inside engine subsystems, prototyping ways to interact reliably with web pages, and measuring the performance and correctness of each change. Findings will help shape the team's technical direction. The role suits experienced systems engineers who enjoy deep investigation, rigorous benchmarking, and documenting both successful and failed experiments. The position is remote and open only to candidates based in the United States.

What you'll do

• Design and build experiments inside browser engine subsystems, studying how data structures and execution behaviour affect performance and correctness
• Evaluate ways to represent and expose browser state, weighing information loss, complexity and behaviour with dynamic web content
• Prototype engine capabilities for reliable programmatic interaction with web pages, including document structure, layout, navigation and event handling
• Instrument engine behaviour and test changes against repeatable workloads, isolating the effect of each change
• Profile the overhead of new capabilities and optimise where measurements justify it
