Senior Staff Software Engineer, Browser Engine (Remote, Canada)

This is a remote, Canada-based senior individual-contributor role on a small team exploring new uses of browser technology. It suits a hands-on engineer who enjoys deep investigation of browser engine internals, rigorous experimentation and building prototypes. The organisation is a mission-driven, open-source-focused technology company with a large global user base. Candidates must be located in Canada. Pay sits within a published band that varies by Canadian location tier.

What you'll do

• Design and implement experiments inside browser engine subsystems and study their effect on performance, correctness and developer tooling
• Evaluate ways to represent and expose browser state, weighing trade-offs in information loss, complexity and compatibility with dynamic web content
• Prototype engine capabilities for reliable programmatic interaction with web pages
• Build repeatable benchmarks and instrumentation, and document both successful and failed experiments
• Profile the overhead of new capabilities and optimise where measurements justify it

What you need

• Deep hands-on experience in at least one browser engine subsystem, with substantial shipped changes
• Strong proficiency in C++ or Rust and comfort navigating a very large codebase
• Solid grasp of memory ownership, concurrency, object lifetimes and performance debugging
• Proven ability to investigate unfamiliar code and build prototypes
• Strong understanding of web platform behaviour and compatibility
• Experience with profiling, tracing, conformance testing and reproducible performance measurement
