Software Engineering Intern (Remote - US only)

Pay: $34.32/hr - $42.13/hr (hourly rate). C. and Puerto Rico). This is a paid, learn-on-the-job software engineering internship at a global non-profit that runs large-scale free knowledge websites used by billions of people each month. Interns are placed on an engineering team within the product and technology side of the organization and given a main project with clear deliverables. The program runs for four months between late February and late June 2027, and applications close November 20, 2026.

What you'll do

• Contribute code to an assigned project on a team, such as mobile apps, editing tools, data platforms, release engineering, or cloud tools and observability
• Work alongside a manager and a dedicated mentor to learn how a large open source codebase is structured
• Deliver agreed milestones for your primary project on schedule
• Collaborate with engineers and volunteers through transparent, public communication channels
• Learn about other departments of the organization and the wider volunteer community

What you need

• Basic experience with at least one back end, front end, or mobile programming language (such as Python, JavaScript, PHP, Kotlin, or Swift), or a demonstrated interest in cybersecurity or privacy
• Basic experience working with databases
• Basic experience with at least one scripting language
• Helpful but not always required: basic SQL, Linux/command-line skills, or understanding of networking or distributed systems concepts
• Ability to work independently, solve problems resourcefulness, and meet deadlines
• Must be authorized to work and based in the US in an eligible state; you must be able to commit to 40 hours per week for the full internship period
