Embedded Python Data & Automation Engineer (Remote, South Africa)

Overlap with US business hours is required. A small technology team is seeking a Python engineer to take over an existing Python codebase, keep production systems running, and improve the data pipelines and automations behind them. The role begins with a structured handover from the current developer and moves toward new internal tool development as the transition matures. Day-to-day communication is mainly through Slack, with planning and check-in meetings held during US business hours.

What you'll do

• Learn an existing Python system through handover sessions and take full ownership of it over time
• Troubleshoot live issues, maintain existing services, and keep the system stable
• Maintain, debug and improve data pipelines and scheduled automations
• Maintain and extend APIs, third-party integrations, authentication flows and webhooks
• Document system architecture, dependencies, workflows and operating procedures, and reduce fragile areas of the code
• Build internal automation tools based on business needs, using Git, pull requests, automated tests and staged deployments

What you need

• 3+ years of professional Python experience in a data-focused environment
• Experience building or maintaining production data pipelines and automations
• Solid experience with APIs, integrations, authentication and webhooks
• Experience working within an existing or legacy codebase
• Working knowledge of SQL and relational databases
• Strong written English and technical documentation skills, and ability to work with meaningful overlap with US business hours
