AI Systems Engineer, LLM & AI Agents (Remote, South Africa)

Working hours follow U.S. business hours. A small, founder-led technology company is building a growing set of AI-powered applications, autonomous agents and internal business software. The engineer in this role will implement AI architectures, ship new AI-driven features and improve existing production systems. The work is execution-focused and calls for someone who has already run AI systems in production and can move quickly with little supervision.

What you'll do

• Build and maintain AI-powered web applications and autonomous agent workflows, including multi-agent orchestration where agents coordinate under a central controller.
• Integrate large language models into production applications and internal tools, and write prompts that perform reliably in production.
• Build and maintain backend services and APIs, and integrate AI applications with CRM and other business systems such as HubSpot or Salesforce.
• Design memory architectures for agents, including graph-based memory, data segmentation, secure information sharing between agents and privacy controls.
• Debug, optimize and improve the reliability, performance and scalability of live systems.
• Work directly with the founder to turn product ideas into working software.

What you need

• At least 5 years of professional software engineering experience, including production AI applications and autonomous agent systems.
• Strong Python and Node.js development skills, with working knowledge of Java.
• Hands-on experience integrating LLMs and multi-agent workflows, and designing graph or agent memory systems.
• Experience integrating APIs and business platforms, ideally HubSpot or Salesforce, into custom applications.
• Familiarity with modern web application development and AI engineering tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Replit or similar frameworks.
• Excellent written and spoken English, comfortable discussing technical topics live with stakeholders, and able to work independently.
