Embedded Python Data & Automation Engineer (Remote, South Africa)

Overlap with US business hours is required. A remote engagement with a client that needs a Python engineer to take over an existing Python environment as the current developer moves on. The work covers keeping production systems running, improving data pipelines and scheduled automations, and building internal tools. Communication is mainly through Slack, with planning sessions and check-ins held during US business hours.

What you'll do

• Learn the existing Python codebase through handover sessions with the departing developer, then take full ownership of it.
• Troubleshoot live production issues and keep systems stable.
• Maintain, debug and improve data pipelines and scheduled automations.
• Maintain and extend APIs, third-party integrations, authentication flows and webhooks.
• Find fragile areas and undocumented dependencies, and reduce technical risk over time.
• Write and maintain system documentation, workflow diagrams and operating procedures, and build practical internal tools as business needs arise.

What you need

• At least 3 years of professional Python experience in a data-focused environment.
• Experience building or maintaining production data pipelines and automations.
• Strong experience with APIs, integrations, authentication and webhooks.
• Experience working in an existing or legacy codebase, and working knowledge of SQL and relational databases.
• Comfortable with Git, pull requests, automated testing and staged deployments.
• Strong written English and technical documentation skills, and the ability to work with meaningful overlap with US business hours.
