FinOps Data Engineer (Remote - Worldwide)
The company hires globally and has no office requirement. A developer-focused software company that is fully remote and hires across more than 60 countries is looking for a FinOps Data Engineer to lead the data side of cloud cost optimization and financial governance across its AWS and GCP environments. The role combines hands-on data engineering with cost analysis, so the person in this seat builds the models and pipelines that make cost, usage and margin figures reliable company-wide. Work spans engineering, finance and product teams, and the goal is to turn savings ideas into realized dollar figures.
What you'll do
- Identify and deliver cloud savings across AWS and GCP, covering rightsizing, storage lifecycle policies, data transfer costs and autoscaling, and track each change through to a measured reduction.
- Design and maintain dbt and BigQuery models that transform raw billing and usage data (such as AWS Cost and Usage Reports and storage analytics) into reconciled, tested mart tables.
- Build cost-versus-revenue and customer segment models that show unit economics and margin by product line, and extend them as new products launch.
- Apply forecasting and statistical anomaly detection to spend data, and quantify savings opportunities with rigor.
- Set up cost attribution, tagging standards and chargeback or showback reporting so engineering teams can own their spend.
- Automate cost reporting, alerts and policy enforcement using Python, Terraform or Lambda, and present findings to technical and non-technical audiences.
What you need
- Strong AWS experience and working knowledge of GCP, including pricing models, billing structures and cost optimization levers.
- Solid data engineering background: dbt, BigQuery or a comparable warehouse, advanced SQL, and dimensional modeling with incremental models and testing.
- Data science fundamentals in forecasting, anomaly detection and experimentation, with judgment on when a rigorous model is warranted.
- Scripting and automation skills in Python, plus Terraform or Pulumi, Lambda or Bash.
- Familiarity with cost tooling such as AWS Cost Explorer, Cost and Usage Reports, GCP billing reports and a BI tool; experience with a cloud cost management platform is a plus.
- Clear written and spoken communication, and comfort working cross-functionally without formal authority.
