Junior Backend Engineer

A remote role for an early-career backend developer to help maintain and improve a health information platform built on PHP, Drupal and Symfony. The organisation runs a technical team that supports a live production system used in the health sector. The role suits someone with a solid backend foundation and some hands-on exposure to Drupal or Symfony, gained through work, personal projects, coursework or open-source contributions. Candidates who are keen to learn an existing codebase and grow into greater responsibility will fit well.

What you'll do

• Support maintenance and development of backend features on a Drupal-based platform
• Develop and modify Drupal modules and backend functionality under senior guidance
• Work with Symfony components and PHP to implement and maintain application features
• Support API development and integration with other systems
• Assist with debugging, troubleshooting and Tier 2 and Tier 3 technical support
• Take part in code reviews, testing and deployment activities

What you need

• Basic to intermediate knowledge of PHP
• Some practical exposure to Drupal, preferably Drupal 9 or 10
• Basic understanding of Symfony application development
• Understanding of REST APIs and relational databases with SQL
• Familiarity with Git and version control
• Willingness to learn and work within an existing production codebase
