Machine Learning Expert

This remote contract role suits experienced machine learning practitioners who enjoy pushing the limits of AI systems. You would help shape challenging, long-horizon engineering tasks for an AI research project run with a leading AI research group. The work is mainly about generating ideas rather than building or reviewing the tasks yourself. It focuses on inference, evaluation and systems problems, with a mix of GPU and CPU-only tasks. The role is best suited to engineers and scientists with hands-on modelling experience who can clearly explain why a problem is difficult for today's most capable models. Remote and flexible, it is open to applicants worldwide.

What you'll do

• Propose hard machine learning engineering tasks for a long-horizon AI research project
• Design tasks difficult enough that frontier models struggle to solve them
• Focus on inference, evaluation and systems work, with a mix of GPU and CPU-only tasks
• Explain clearly why each proposed problem is hard for a frontier model

What you need

• Current or recent role as an ML research engineer, research scientist or applied scientist
• Hands-on experience training, fine-tuning or optimising models in PyTorch or JAX
• Deep knowledge of at least one of: LLMs (pretraining, alignment, evals), GPU inference and performance, reinforcement learning, or scientific ML
• Able to explain why a problem is hard for a frontier model
• Experience writing benchmark or evaluation questions is a strong plus
• PhD in ML, CS or physics, or MSc with strong research output, is a plus
