Senior Data Scientist, Consumer Credit (Remote, Portugal)

A fast-growing financial technology company serving businesses and consumers across Africa is hiring a Senior Data Scientist to lead modelling for its consumer lending products. You will build credit scoring, affordability and behavioural models that shape how customers are approved, priced and retained. The role sits between data science, credit risk and product, and includes setting up the team's first suite of credit risk models.

What you'll do

• Build and deploy credit scoring, affordability and behavioural models used in underwriting, pricing and collections
• Design and analyse experiments to improve approval rates, loss rates and profitability
• Work with product teams to put decision logic into real-time systems
• Keep data quality, regulatory compliance and responsible model use in place across decisioning processes
• Build models for collections, churn and customer retention
• Coach product squads on experimentation and data-driven decision-making

What you need

• Degree or equivalent in a quantitative field such as statistics, mathematics or engineering
• At least 5 years of experience in data science, decision science or risk analytics in financial services
• Working knowledge of credit risk, consumer lending and the related regulatory considerations
• Strong SQL and proficiency in Python or R
• Hands-on experience with A/B testing, machine learning, collections modelling and churn management
• Ability to explain complex analysis clearly to business stakeholders and take high ownership in fast-paced cross-functional teams
