Senior Data Scientist, Credit (Remote, South Africa)

A fast-growing fintech company offering payments, banking, credit and business management tools to millions of individuals and businesses across Africa is hiring a Senior Data Scientist for its Consumer Credit team. You will build the models and experiments that guide how the company underwrites, prices and retains consumer borrowers. The role sits between data science, credit risk and product, and you will help set the team's approach to machine learning versus traditional credit methods.

What you'll do

• Build and deploy credit scoring, affordability and behavioural models used in underwriting, pricing and collections
• Design and run experiments to improve approval rates, loss rates and profitability
• Work with product squads to embed decision logic into real-time systems
• Build models that improve collections, churn management and customer retention
• Check data quality and make sure models are used ethically and in line with regulatory requirements
• Coach product teams on experimentation and data-driven decision-making

What you need

• Degree or equivalent qualification in a quantitative field such as statistics, mathematics or engineering
• 5+ years of experience in data science, decision science or risk analytics, ideally within financial services
• Working knowledge of credit risk, consumer lending and the regulatory considerations around them
• Proficiency in SQL and at least one of Python or R, with strong statistics fundamentals
• Hands-on experience with A/B testing, machine learning, collections modelling or churn modelling
• Ability to explain complex analysis clearly to business stakeholders
• Must be based in South Africa to apply
