Software Engineer - AI Tooling Infrastructure (Remote - Worldwide)
Candidates can apply from any country, with work aligned to a globally distributed, asynchronous team. A fast-growing developer platform company is hiring a backend engineer for its AI tooling team. The team runs production services that AI clients and agents use, including an agent-facing server, skill-related services, and an in-product assistant. This is a systems and infrastructure role focused on reliability, authorization, and observability rather than building AI models. The position is hands-on: you will build and operate these services, not just advise on them.
What you'll do
- Build, deploy, scale and release the production backend services behind the team's AI products.
- Define and track reliability targets (SLOs and error budgets) with the SRE team, and use them to prioritize fixes.
- Take part in an on-call rotation as a first responder, lead investigations, and write follow-ups and runbooks.
- Design authentication and authorization for agent and machine clients, including OAuth apps, scoped tokens, and safe permission changes.
- Set up rate limits, cost and abuse controls for high-volume agent traffic, and make services degrade gracefully when dependencies fail.
- Improve observability (metrics, traces, logs, dashboards, alerts) and reshape services when that makes them safer to run.
What you need
- 5+ years building and running backend services in production, including carrying on-call.
- Strong TypeScript or Go, and comfortable working in the other.
- Experience designing and operating APIs with real consumers, including versioning, error handling, rate limiting and backwards-compatible change.
- Solid understanding of OAuth, OIDC, JWT and API authorization, and of where implementations often deviate from the spec.
- Good working knowledge of PostgreSQL and relational databases, plus CI/CD, Docker, and infrastructure as code.
- Clear written communication and comfort working asynchronously across time zones. Fluency in English is required.
Open to applicants anywhere in the world.
