Software Engineer, Database Systems (Remote - Worldwide)

Candidates can work from any country; the team operates asynchronously across time zones. A developer data platform company with a globally distributed, remote-first team is hiring a software engineer for its core database team. The team builds an open source embedded database alongside a managed cloud service that lets users and automated agents create databases on demand. The work covers both the engine's compatibility with a widely used SQL interface and the reliability of the cloud control and data planes. The role suits engineers who enjoy high-stakes systems work in a fast, asynchronous environment.

What you'll do

• Advance the open source database engine, with a focus on its compatibility layer for a major relational database interface.
• Build and maintain testing and correctness guarantees so that code changes do not break existing behavior.
• Operate and improve the managed cloud service, including its API and data plane.
• Improve scalability so the cloud platform can support a much larger number of databases.
• Work with customers and other internal teams to turn real developer problems into engineering work.

What you need

• Experience building databases or other low-level, high-reliability systems such as hypervisors, operating system kernels, or storage systems.
• Strong proficiency in Rust.
• Experience with correctness testing methods such as deterministic simulation testing, fuzzing, differential testing, or formal verification.
• Experience operating large-scale distributed systems in production on cloud infrastructure such as AWS and Kubernetes.
• Experience with open source communities or remote team collaboration.
• Clear written and verbal communication with both technical and non-technical audiences.
