Staff WordPress Engineer

A senior technical leadership role for an engineer who wants to shape the direction of a whole platform area rather than a single backlog. The organisation runs WordPress hosting and WordPress product work at very large scale, with a large installed base of live customer sites. The role is fully remote and async-first, with a required daily overlap with US Eastern working hours. It suits a deeply experienced PHP and WordPress engineer who also understands the Linux and server stack beneath their code, enjoys writing design documents, and is comfortable leading consolidation and migration work without disrupting existing customers.

What you'll do

• Set technical direction for a platform area, including target architecture and migration path
• Lead consolidation and migration work with live customers, with backward compatibility and rollback plans
• Drive automation of provisioning, configuration and maintenance
• Design systems and interfaces that other teams build against
• Act as escalation point for complex production issues and write up post-incident reviews
• Mentor senior engineers and raise the engineering bar through reviews and design discussions

What you need

• 8+ years professional software engineering with deep PHP 8.x experience (OOP, DI, Composer, PSR, static analysis)
• Deep WordPress expertise including hooks, REST API, WP-CLI and upgrade-safe plugin architecture
• Strong Linux fundamentals and hosting stack knowledge (nginx/Apache, PHP-FPM, MySQL/MariaDB, Redis/Memcached)
• Proven track record leading technical direction across multiple teams and phased migrations
• Shell scripting and automation of operational work
• Automated testing experience (PHPUnit, Codeception, wp-browser or equivalent) and excellent written communication
