Engineering Manager (Remote - Worldwide)
Candidates can apply from any country; the team is globally distributed across many time zones. A developer-focused data platform company that offers a complete backend stack built on Postgres is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead one of its engineering teams. The team is working on an initiative to build the next generation of agentic databases, serving a very large and fast-growing number of databases. The company is remote-first, open-source-friendly, and works asynchronously. This is a people-management role, though you will still take part in design discussions and help set engineering quality standards.
What you'll do
- Lead, coach, and grow a remote engineering team through 1:1s, performance management, career development, and onboarding.
- Own hiring for the team as hiring manager, conduct first-round interviews, and work with Talent Acquisition to close strong candidates.
- Own the team's roadmap and project delivery, setting clear milestones and keeping stakeholders aligned through written updates.
- Triage cross-team requests and support tickets, and manage the team's service-level objectives.
- Train as an Incident Commander, coordinate incident response, and lead blameless post-incident reviews.
- Surface risks, dependencies, and tradeoffs early to leadership.
What you need
- 5+ years of engineering experience, with enough technical depth to be credible with engineers building complex backend and database systems.
- 3+ years managing remote, globally distributed engineering teams that work asynchronously across time zones.
- Experience managing engineers at a cloud, SaaS, or developer tools company, ideally including a developer-facing API or platform from early stage to production.
- Solid understanding of backend systems, including APIs, authentication, and Postgres access control (roles, grants, row-level security). Experience with SQLite and Postgres ecosystems is a plus.
- A documented record of performance management and difficult conversations, plus a strong written communication style.
- Comfortable with ambiguity, aggressive scoping, and eval-driven development.
Open to applicants anywhere in the world.
