Intermediate Backend Engineer

This remote role is for an intermediate backend engineer who can take features from initial problem definition through to release and production follow-up. You will work within a product area alongside product, frontend, infrastructure and security colleagues. The organisation is a software business that values autonomy and clear written communication in an asynchronous, distributed team. It suits engineers who are comfortable working with limited day-to-day guidance, care about code quality and security, and enjoy using modern tools, including AI coding assistants, with careful review.

What you'll do

• Design, build, test and ship backend features in Ruby on Rails, Go or another modern language
• Build and maintain APIs, background jobs, integrations and data models
• Add and improve automated tests, including unit, integration, contract and end-to-end
• Review colleagues' code for correctness, security, performance and operational risk
• Investigate build, deployment and runtime issues and propose fixes for technical debt
• Take part in on-call or operational support where the team requires it

What you need

• Professional experience building and shipping production backend applications
• Solid grounding in APIs, databases, testing, debugging and performance
• Experience with Ruby on Rails, Go or another modern backend language
• Ability to own a feature from clarification through delivery and follow-up
• Strong written communication for a remote, asynchronous team
• Practical experience using AI coding tools and reviewing their output
