Senior Database Reliability Engineer (Remote - Americas and EMEA)
Some countries are excluded because the company cannot have staff working there permanently; check the company's published country list before applying. This is a senior database reliability role on the platform team at a fast-growing, all-remote software company. The team runs the company's relational database fleet (MySQL and PostgreSQL), a Redis-based caching layer, and the internal tooling that lets product teams use these systems safely. The position is the most senior database reliability role on the team, acting as the technical lead for database and cache work and helping grow the practice over time.
What you'll do
- Own reliability of the caching layer, including capacity planning, failover behavior, upgrade strategy, and usage patterns for Redis Enterprise and AWS ElastiCache.
- Serve on the on-call rotation for production data systems and act as the escalation point for data-layer incidents.
- Manage database and cache infrastructure as code with Terraform, keeping changes repeatable, reviewable and safe.
- Build templated database and cache standards for internal developers, along with dashboards, alerts and SLOs for data-layer health.
- Lead design reviews, advise product teams on schema design, query patterns and capacity, and turn recurring questions into documentation and runbooks.
- Drive performance and resilience improvements across the MySQL, PostgreSQL and Redis fleets, including architecture decisions for new services.
What you need
- At least 7 years in systems administration, systems engineering or software development, with at least 4 years running production relational databases.
- Deep expertise in MySQL or PostgreSQL and working knowledge of the other, including their extension and tooling ecosystems.
- Experience designing and operating highly available cloud database systems (AWS or similar), managed with Terraform or similar IaC tools.
- Experience with caching such as Redis, and with observability tools such as Datadog, Prometheus or CloudWatch.
- Comfort operating stateful services alongside Kubernetes or other distributed systems.
- Strong written communication and a habit of writing clear, asynchronous documentation.
