Senior Program Officer, Sub-Saharan Africa (Remote - Ghana, Kenya, South Africa)

A US-based non-profit that funds volunteer-driven online knowledge communities is hiring a Senior Program Officer to run its regional grants programs for Sub-Saharan Africa. The role sits within a central grantmaking team and focuses on trust-based, participatory funding that reaches communities that have been historically underserved. The position is remote and works across many time zones with grantees, volunteers and committee members.

What you'll do

• Carry out the grantmaking strategy for the region, taking into account local community needs, regional context and broader movement trends
• Manage and monitor the regional grant portfolio, including annual planning, proposal review and organizational (financial and narrative) assessments
• Build and support regional funding committees, set agendas, and turn committee input into clear funding recommendations
• Act as the main liaison with grantees and applicants, offering feedback, supporting capacity building and helping resolve sensitive issues
• Review grant progress and reports through conversations, documents and site visits, and use grant data to shape regional priorities
• Represent the organization externally with regional philanthropic groups and community leaders

What you need

• Current legal work authorization and residence in Ghana, Kenya (citizens or permanent residents only) or South Africa
• Solid knowledge of trust-based philanthropy or community-based grantmaking, with international grantmaking experience
• Experience with participatory decision-making and nonprofit capacity building as a funder, consultant or nonprofit leader
• Strong strategic, analytical and organizational skills, with the judgment to manage several priorities and deadlines
• Excellent English, written and spoken, including presenting to large groups; additional African or other languages are a plus
• Willingness to work across time zones and travel internationally 1-3 times a year when circumstances allow
