Site Reliability Engineer (Remote, UK)
This is a newly created, first-ever Site Reliability Engineer role at a fast-growing, venture-backed technology company in the mobility and payments sector. The company runs payment and enforcement systems that must stay available and accurate around the clock. You will own the cloud platform these systems run on, along with the reliability practice around it, and work daily with the product engineering teams. The role reports directly to the CTO and has no direct reports.
What you'll do
- Own the production platform on Google Kubernetes Engine, including Helm, Postgres, workflow orchestration and the staging and production environments, plus how changes are promoted between them.
- Agree service level objectives for money-moving and enforcement paths with engineers and the business, and alert a named owner when they are at risk.
- Run on-call, including the rota, runbooks, incident process and blameless postmortems that lead to concrete changes.
- Build observability across cloud monitoring, logging and tracing so problems are found before customers notice.
- Manage all infrastructure as code through Terraform and CI, with no manual console changes, including encrypted secrets handling.
- Own CI/CD pipelines and safe release practice, including rollbacks, progressive rollout and cloud cost control with measured results.
What you need
- At least 12 to 24 months recently owning production reliability for a Kubernetes-based platform (GKE, EKS or AKS), with clear personal accountability for outcomes.
- Experience writing and maintaining infrastructure as code, ideally Terraform, and building CI/CD pipelines with safe release and environment promotion.
- Track record of reducing cloud cost with measured before-and-after results.
- Experience setting up or rebuilding on-call and incident response in a small team.
- Experience building observability and SLOs that changed what got fixed.
- Ability to work with product engineers as partners and to get them involved in reliability work.
- Sensible, critical use of AI tools for operations work.
- Right to work in the UK and based in the UK, as the role is remote within the UK only.
Applicants must be based in: United Kingdom.
