Software Engineer, Ruby on Rails APIs (Remote - EMEA)
Open to candidates who are authorized to work in the country where they live, and who can work within a workable overlap with European business hours. A distributed global employment platform that helps companies hire, pay and support staff across many countries is looking for a software engineer to build internal APIs. The team runs the company's core APIs, connected services (including Model Context Protocol services) and identity and access management systems. The work is fully remote and asynchronous, with a strong emphasis on documentation and sustainable working habits.
What you'll do
- Work with internal stakeholders to map their workflows, define acceptance criteria and split work into small, releasable increments.
- Design, build, test, review and release production Ruby on Rails APIs within established architecture and security practices.
- Handle authentication, authorization and sensitive data carefully, and seek review for unfamiliar access-control or integration changes.
- Investigate defects and API failures using evidence, add regression coverage and improve maintainability.
- Measure with stakeholders whether delivered workflows are adopted and actually save time.
- Take part in domain modeling and design discussions, give constructive code reviews, and document API behavior for asynchronous teammates.
What you need
- 3+ years of professional software development experience with a focus on Ruby.
- Proven experience building and maintaining Ruby on Rails applications, with the ability to explain API design choices and use Git well.
- Solid code quality habits: readable code, automated tests (TDD where appropriate), continuous integration and secure coding awareness.
- Practical fluency with AI-assisted development, including independently verifying generated code, tests and assumptions.
- Clear written and spoken English and comfort working in an agile, asynchronous remote team.
- Nice to have: React and TypeScript front-end experience, or exposure to developer-facing APIs, identity and access management, or Model Context Protocol services.
Applicants must be based in: United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, Spain, Poland, Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, Uae.
